Targert for the rest of the week 30/01/12 - 05/01/12

To keep up with the coursework schedule I still have a lot to finish this week:
  • Finish my magazine design drafts and post them on my blog
  • Arrange and take my test shots
  • Draft my article for my magazine
This needs to be done and posted on my blog by Sunday 05/01/12

My Artist Persona (Artist X)

Artist X would be male and age 18, X would be a home-grown music artist from Leicester. X would of become a fan of British Rap from the age of around 14. He enjoys things like Football, Hanging out with his mates and going into town. X became successful from constant performing at local clubs and bars, and his ability at free style Rap and performances. X stays in touch with his fans through his fan pages on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, he also posts recordings of himself performing on MySpace. At the minute X is on the fringe of becoming successful in the UK and has an oncoming album which will be released in April 2012. X's musical inspiration would be Devlin, Giggs and Dappy. Many people compare him to Professor Green from his style of music and attitude. As well as performing X is also very keen at producing his own music and other artists.

Magazine Cover Inpirations

While doing the first drafts of my own magazine, I have taken a lot of inspiration from magazines which covers are displayed in the colour pallet of Black, White and Grey. I think they particularly work well for this genre because these colours compliment the dark coloured clothes that Rap artists tend to wear. I also like how they have used Black and White images from how the black and white makes the dark colour clothes display well.

Review of my Pitch

Just today I had to stand in front of class and present my 25 word pitch which I created on Animoto. After the viewing had finished I had to answer some questions form the class. I'm fairly sure my Animoto video went down well but I think I struggled witht he questions a little bit. I answered all of them but on some I struggled to properly respond to the best of my ability so may not have clearly got all of my points across. Overall I think it went pretty good and the members of my class got a better idea of what my idea is. This is a video that shows me responding to questions from members of my class regarding my animoto pitch.

Out of the other members of my class there were two other pitches that I thought out of the rest of the class were particularly good. Firstly, I thought Vishal Kumar's pitch about American Hip-hop was very well delivered from how out of everyones pitch his gave the most clear showing of what his magazine is about. Secondly, I liked Jack Olund's pitch because although I am creating a Rap/Hip-hop magazine, he included a lot of rock artists which I also like such as Blink 182 and Angels and Airwaves

Magazine Pitch

Decision on Style of Music

I have decided that the style of music that I want my magazine to be based around is R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap. Although these music styles may have some differences, I think they are similar enough to combined them into my magazine. Also I want my magazine to be British and to be focused around British artists. My main inspirations for this are Professor Green, Rizzle Kicks, Example, Tinie Tempah and Tinchy Stryder.

Colour Palette

This list starts from the most best colours to use on a magazine to the worst...
Black on yellow

Green on white

Bummer
Rogue Hero
Ultra ViolentStrenuous

Audience Profile

These are my two fictional people who I would imagine to be similar to my target audience

This is Ryan. He likes to hang out with his friends, play football, watching TV and go skateboarding. He is very interested in reading about his favourite Rap artists from Britain, and also in finding out about new Hip-hop artists so he can download their music to his Ipod. He is also very concerned about going shopping and keeping up with fashion trends so he reads my magazine weekly to get this information. He likes reading it because it has the artists he is concerned about with reviews and it is not too intellectual of a read.

This is Chloe. She likes to see her friends, go shopping, listen to music and go to the cinema. She is tired of all the girly pop magazines and really just wants to read a magazine that features all her favourite UK Grime artists. She wants a magazine like this so she has more pictures to cut out and stick on her wall as posters. She doesn't exactly dress like the other teenage girls and wants to style herself by looking at pictures and fashion of her favourite female R&B artists.

Institution that would produce my magazine

IPC Media

IPC Media, who used to be know as International Publishing Corporation, are a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Inc.. It is a digital publisher in the United Kingdom. It also has the largest portfolio in the UK, selling over 350 million copies each year. They own lots of magazines but the music magazines they own include 'NME', 'Guitar' and 'Bass'

I decided that I thought they would produce my magazine because as a company they produce a very broad selection of magazines so it could accommodate any kind of magazine. Secondly, I hope that my magazine would reach a wide audience in the UK so with the size of there current portfolio would be able to achieve this. Finally, I don't entirely want my magazine to be focused at one audience because that narrows the amount of readers. So I would like my magazine to be like NME from how they incorporate one strong theme, which in there case is indie and in mine R&B, but are not afraid to include other genres of music.

Possible Magazine Names

I have not yet decided on a final magazine name but these are some that I am considering:

Blazin'
Intitution
Prodigy
Simplified
Un-wind
Passion

Moodboard

This is my Moodboard that I created on microsoft publisher from magazine covers. I want my theme to be based around British Hip-hop/R&B/Rap, to do this I only used British magazines with British music stars featured. I used magazines such as D101, RWD, The Big Issue and Disorder.

Fashion Ideas

These are few items of clothing that I like and I would consider using on the model on the cover of my magazine, a lot of the items I have chosen I own myself :

Chinos

Chinos are trousers that are quick skinny and particulary thin around the ankles and shin. I think chinos would be good to use for my magazine because they come in so many different colours, as you can see in my images, you can pick any colour to match other clothes. The best places to buy chinos is shops such as Topman and Burton. I personally like them so much I own two pairs myself. They usually cost between £25-£40

Snapbacks

Snapbacks are caps that are originated from American sports teams. I think they would be appropriate for my magazine because they have been adopted by the genres of Rap and Hip-hop which are the kind of genres I am looking at for my magazine.
I like them because they are all good at encorperating colour schemes with the same kind of layout. You can purchase these at shops such as Footasylum and JD Sports. They usually cost between £15-£30

Hoodies

Hoodies, but I am particularly focusing on the ones with zips down the centre. They are light weight jumpers that are casual in colder weather. Hoodies have been a style and used by Hip-hop artists such as one of my music inspiration Rizzle Kicks as you can see in my picture. Hoodies can be purchased in pretty much any colour so would be a flexible piece of clothing to be able to use. They can be purchased in shops such as Topman and River Island. They usually cost about £20-£40.

Vans shoes
Vans is a brand of youth culture skate wear. These are the most common shoes that they make, they are a form of plimsolls. They are most commonly just known as 'Vans' after the name of the brand. As well as being produced in many different colours they also can have different patterns on which gives them a broader range of products. They usually cost between £25-£45. They can be bought in most shoe stores such as Burton or Schuh

Gillets

They can also be known as body warmers. They are padded, sleeveless coats that were originally just made as a body warmer but has now become a fashion item. A lot of Grime and Rap artists wear them as casual jackets, They are sold in shops such as JD, River Island and Cult, in brands such as Nike and Addidas. They are quite expensive and usually cost between £35-£60.

Homework update

I was unable to complete the homework i set myself in the allotted time, this was due to a technical difficulty. My idea was that I wanted to display my front covers as picture on my blog so that they can be seen without using scribd. I proceeded with this by designing my front cover analysis's on microsoft word 2007 but it was only made aware to me on finishing them that you have to use microsoft publisher to save your work as a picture. Consequently as I don't have access to microsoft publisher at home I hope to post my front cover analysis's on my blog tomorow.

Music Inspiration

Professor Green

Professor Green's real name is Stephen Manderson. He is a British rapper and has collaborated with artists such as Lily Allen, Example, Labrinth and Maverick Sabre. Also he has just released his newest album 'At Your Inconviennience' which is a amazing. I like his music because his albums combinds deep lyrics from events in his life with up-beat rap. I will use him as one of my icons when I style my magazine.

Chase & Status

Chase & Status are a British, Electronic and Dubstep music production duo made up of Sam Milton and Will Kennard. They are famous for collaborating with artists such as Plan B, Tinie Tempah, Dizzie Rascal and Cee Lo Green on there most recent album 'No More Idols'. It is difficult to look at there style of fashion because they are producers they are rarely featured in there own music videos. I like there music because they are a music production duo rather then a band or a singer it allows them to have a greater rang of sounds to there songs, also with the incredible artists they have featuring on there songs it makes each song individual unlike any others they have done.

Plan B

Plan B's real name is Ben Drew. He is a British Rapper, Actor, Singer-Song Writer and Film Director. As well as a career in music he has appeared in films such as 'Adulthood' and 'Harry Brown' and in 2012 he will release 'ILL Manors' which is his first film as a director. I think his style is particularly interesting because unlike other rappers and hip hop stars he generally wears suits when he performs. I like his music because he is very individual from how he not only raps but he is a very good soul singer and he combindeds these two qualities when he writes his songs. The music video I have attached is a prime example of his rapping and soul singing, this is also his most successful single as a artist, peaking at number 3 on the UK music chart.

Maverick Sabre

Maverick Sabre, real name Michael Stafford, is an English/Irish Rapper, Vocalist and Songwriter. The types of music he is associated with are Rap, Folk, Soul and R&B. Although he may not be very well known at the minute he has been predicted big prospects for 2012, including his up and coming album 'Lonely Are The Brave' at just age 21. I particularly admire him because he is the first artist to make me admire Folk and Soul music from his own modern twist on it through his acoustic based songs.

Rizzle Kicks

Rizzle Kicks is a British hip-hop duo made up of Jordan Stephens and Harley Alexander-Sule. The pair both attended the Brit school and in 2011 released there debut album 'Stereotypical'. They also release alot of remixes of popular songs where they re-write parts of the songs, the video I attached below is a perfect example of this. I like there style of music because there voices perfectly match each other from how one of them does the harmonies and the other does the rapping. Through this it encorperates R&B and Rap to create there form of hip-hop.
